What is Osteopathy
Osteopathy is a system of
healing where the practitioner assesses, eases and mobilizes the patient’s body,
helping it engage the self-healing it is capable of. Manual osteopaths work
with the muscles and fascia like massage therapists, mobilize joints similar
too but not in the same way as chiropractors, and can advice on ongoing
therapeutic and strengthening exercises like physiotherapists.
You can expect your manual osteopathic
practitioner to do a complete body assessment because osteopathy treats the
entire body, as a single functioning unit. When one part of the body is dysfunctional,
it throws the entire body out of balance. Sometimes the complications that show
up to the patient, are only the symptom. Your manual osteopath will help get to
the root of the problem, improving structure thereby enhancing function. With
better function, comes better mobility, better healing, better health and
better quality of life.
How I Came to be a Manual Osteopath and Life Coach
As a Copywriter and academic, I spent
(too many) hours in a chair which resulted in structural problems and chronic pain.
It didn’t help that I was obese, stationary and unhappy. It took years of hard
work on myself – internally and externally – to get to a place where I was
healthy and ???, with a career others dream of – I was a well-paid Copywriter
working in my pajamas from my home office.
The only problem was I wasn’t
happy. I hated work, despite enjoying the people I worked with and the projects
that came along. I hated sitting, I hated staring at a screen, and I hated that
I hadn’t changed course in undergrad and found a way to switch to study science
and become a manual practitioner as I wanted. Soon I was miserable, I’d gained
back the 80 pounds I’d lost and my mental state was deteriorating alarmingly. I
didn’t understand how I could have gotten out of poverty, broke away from toxic
family, worked my way to career success, built happy relationships, learned
healthy ways to parent, and grown so much as a person only to be so miserable.
The answer came in three successive
diagnoses: an autoimmune illness, a mental illness, and the most scary, retinal
deterioration with the diagnosis that it as a result of a progressive genetic
disorder. I hit bottom, processed what was happening (in the unhealthiest of ways)
and then decided, I would set out to live the life I wanted, even if I did it
without sight. In the time since, I’ve relearned how to live with my new
circumstances, I dived into the study of the human body, it’s intricacies, and
the practice of healing it, and have been grateful to learn that my vision hasn’t
deteriorated any further.
As with you, I’ve had my share
of struggle, but I fight always for happiness and health. Now I am helping
others – to get physically ready for their best lives and mentally ready to move
forward – and I’ve never been happier, healthier or more fulfilled. I’m looking
forward to working with you.
